The iconic picture of Hector Pieterson, a black schoolchild shot by the police in Soweto near Johannesburg during a peaceful process march, brought home the brutalities of the Apartheid regime to many people within and outside of South Africa. In the weeks that followed over 700 people - mostly youth - were killed.
I tried to walk in the shoes of the youth that were active on 16th June 1976 and I was at a loss. My grandparents were incarcerated for being members of the Communist Party and I often convince myself I would have also been part of the struggle at all costs, the truth is I am not able to declare that action ! The Umthombo Wesizwe children were born after 1994 – in the new South Africa. At Umthombo we are part of a solution to not only the aftermath of Apartheid but also to globalisation that is merging cultures quicker than adaption, Cultural Diversity Intelligence is the adaption option !
