Leadership in South Africa 2011
Ruth and Melanie, 2 Umthombo directors, attended the TSiBa Developing Leaders Conference held over Youth Day. Ruth shared her inspiration with the Hout Bay Task Team and the passion and inspiration was electric ! Sharing knowledge learnt is at the core of development, the humility of inspiring leaders always reminds me we are all humans doing our best – some more noticeable than others ! TSiBa conducted interviews with 23 thought and action leaders, here are some interesting preliminary findings that we want to share:
JOURNEYS TO LEADERSHIP
Few recognized themselves as leaders, many only recently
- The journey was never planned
- Travel was a critical turning point for some
- Responding to needs rather than trying to be leaders
- Confidence grew from trying something out, often at a young age
FORMATIVE PEOPLE & EXPERIENCES
- Parents and teachers were very influential
- Experience & hard work
- Getting tired of the excuses – implementing a solution
- Someone early in their teens or early careers who believed in them/ saw something they did not see and took a genuine personal interest
DEFINING LEADERSHIP
Few have a definition or feel a need to have one…
- Servant leadership
- Being true to yourself
- Being a driver/ agent for change,
- Everyone is a leader/ has the potential to be one
