The Pilot Programme:In 2009 the organisation embarked on a pilot programme that had as its core, three structured educational and experiential learning-based workshops at youth camps for 11-12 year olds. The prime objective of the programme is to empower pre-teen children, from diverse backgrounds with an identity that will enable them to develop *community based leadership qualities. (Annexure B) This will be achieved through the development of cognitive, emotional and interpersonal competencies much needed in contemporary South Africa. Each workshop is facilitated by a suitably qualified team, which includes psychologists or behavioral therapists, community workers and educationalists. The activities are run by specially-trained facilitators drawn from, among others, a pool of university/technical college students. The fundamental objective of the programme (as can be seen in figure 1) is to create change in the attitudes, knowledge and behavior of the children that will, inter alia, enable them to: Develop self esteem Understand diversity and break the cycle of prejudice Understand children’s rights and obligations as set out in the SA constitution Work creatively with those of different cultural background Develop team spirit and cooperation Use negotiating skills to manage perceived conflict See diversity as an asset as opposed to a liabilitiy Develop innate leadership competencies The programme was supported by active parental and community involvement. At the end of the pilot project in December 2009, community based projects specifically devised by the children themselves, and revolving around showcasing SA to the rest of the World for the occasion of the 2010 World Cup, were implemented. These projects were facilitated and monitored by the group facilitators. The programme concluded with a presentation of these community projects together with an award ceremony for the children.
